JazzCity2019: 13th Annual Chicago Latin Jazz Festival
Humboldt Park Boathouse 1301 N. Sacramento and Navy Pier, 600 E Grand Ave.
On July 12 and 13 the community gathers at the Humboldt Park Boathouse to celebrate the rich musical heritage of Latin America. With Cuban vocalist Melvis Santa and her group Ashedi on Friday, and a piano duo with vocalist Nythia Martinez and Darwin Noguera and flutist and saxophonist Jane Bunnett leading her all-women Cuban group Maqueque on Saturday, the festival showcases women’s leadership roles in the Latin genre.
On Friday, the hand-picked Chicago Latin Jazz Collaborative led by trumpet lion Victor Garcia celebrates the music of trumpeter and conguero Jerry Gonzalez, and Fred Cantu’s Big Band opens the dance floor on Saturday night. On Saturday afternoon an interactive workshop led by Melvis Santa, a performance by the Native American Black Hawk Performance Company and a jazz chat with Roy McGrath and percussion master Alejo Poveda offer a chance to dig deeper.
The festival moves to Navy Pier on Sunday afternoon with the Tribute to Jerry Gonzalez and Jane Bunnett and Maqueque at the Pier’s Lakeside Stage on the city’s front lawn.
